ermany is a federation of sixteen states united under one constitution.   Some of these states evolved as almost seperate countries with their own cultures and dialects until around 1500 a.d. with the Protestant Reformation, while other states were formed by treaty after World War II.   Today the German language is spoken by over 100 million people in Germany and surrounding countries. The population is divided almost equally between Protestants and Catholics with small populations of Muslims and Hebrews.   The average population density is very high, with approximately 590 people per square mile and crowding in the major cities is even heavier.   In spite of it's population, Germany enjoys one of the most productive and strongest economies in the world.

he major holidays celebrated in Germany are the same as in any Christian nation.   Regional festivals such as Munich's Octoberfest and Hamburg's Dom festival are unique and contribute to Germany's distinct cultural flavor.   They are celebrated for several days with pageants, parades, markets and beer and wine tents.   The oldest of these festivals is Karneval or Fasching centered in the city of Cologne.   It is the German Mardi Gras celebrated nationwide just before the Lenten season and the tradition dates back several centuries.

ew countries on this earth can boast the kind of natural and man-made beauty unique to Germany.   The sparkling shores of the North Sea, the lush rustic beauty of the Black Forest, the majestic intoxicating Bavarian Alps, the ancient Roman ruins in Cologne, the medieval facades of the Market Square in Weimar, and the picturesque castles that dot the landscape throughout the nation are testimony to the rich natural and cultural heritage of the German people.   Words and images cannot describe or illustrate enough.   Germany must be experienced with all five senses.
