aarland, the smallest German federal state, has been a major factor in disputes between Germany and France after both World Wars.   On January 1, 1957 Saarland became a German state and this event is considered a cornerstone in modern Franco-German relations.

aarland is named after the Saar River, a branch of the Mosel.   The Saar River winds through the countryside through the scenic valley vineyards and through the town of Mettlach, a very popular tourist attraction.   Among the tourist attractions is the city of Saarbrücken and the Baroque Ludwigskirke built in 1775.   The cuisine is a unique mixture of French and German recipe and atmosphere.
