orth Rhine-Palatinate is known as the land of "coal and steel" in Germany.   The Ruhr area is Europes largest industrial area.   Thirty power plants in this area supply most of the energy used in Germany.   It is the most populated state with around 521 persons per square kilometer.

      orth Rhine-Palatinate, in spite of it's heavy industry, offers the visitor some of the most thrilling scenery in Germany.   The city of Cologne was founded by the Romans in the year 50 and many ruins from that period can still be seen throughout the city.   The Cologne Cathedral or Dom took 600 years to build and was finally completed in the year 1880.   Cologne is also the center of the German national Karneval Festival.

      ther areas of interest to the tourist include the cities of Düsseldorf and Bonn, the Münsterland with its numerous moated castles and the half-timbered houses in Freudenberg.
