ne of the first members of the Hanseatic League, the city state of Hamburg was established in the year 811.   Hamburg is not only the second largest city in Germany, it is also the second largest seaport in Europe.   Hamburg is located on the Elbe River, 100 km inland around two lakes, the Binnenalster and the Aussenalster.   Hamburg was never ruled by a king or prince, but was governed by it's own citizens for most of it's history.

      amburg is abundant in lush green landscape with almost half of the city area consisting of gardens, parks and woodlands.   Some sights of interest include the Alster Canal, the Elbe River, the Hamburg Rathaus and the Hamburg Theater.
